10 EASY STEPS TO A GREENER OFFICE
- Use natural light when possible. Not only will you save resources, since artificial lighting accounts for 50% of electrical use in office buildings, but you will lower your electric bill as well. Use CFL bulbs or LED lighting. Also, turn them off!
- Reduce paper waste by instituting double sided printing. Use electronic communications and data storage whenever possible. Use chlorine-free paper with 30% recycled content, grown in certified forests. Stop receiving unneeded catalogues. Recycle paper, cardboard, office paper, and catalogues.
- Use rechargeable batteries. Recycle all batteries.
- Use refillable pens, rewriteable CDs and DVDs,and reusable tabs.
- Recycle print cartridges, aluminum, computers, all plastics, cardboard, and paper.
- Use recycled or remanufactured products. Many paper and plastic products contain up to 100% recycled content. Remanufactured toner cartridges are now high quality, with some producing no waste at all.
- Green break-room products and cleaners are now readily available, and are safe for you and the environment. Bio-based products made of corn, sugar cane and potato products can replace plastic utensils, bags, and dinner ware.
- Buy Energy Star certified machines and products.
- Reduce frequency of deliveries and travel to reduce gas consumption.
- Encourage carpooling and public transportation.
